We are back from Hong Kong and Napa Valley is finally starting to look a little bit normal again after the fires. The smoke has dissipated and now its time to rebuild.
This weeks $15 Friday is for all my sweet wine loving drinkers. Sweet wine gets a bad reputation and truthfully I find quality to be lacking in some of the sweeter inexpensive wines.
**To be clear, we are talking about wines with actual residual sugar which are produced by not fermenting the grape juice to completely dry. Because fermentation is halted, the sugar doesn’t convert to alcohol leaving you with 1. more sugar, 2. less alcohol, and 3. a little CO2. I am NOT talking about more “dessert” wines like port which can be made by fortifying with a spirit or late harvest botrycised wines like Sauternes.**
For my friends out there who typically don’t drink wine, are maybe into sweeter beverages like juice and soda, this could be a great wine for you to get started with. Or maybe you’re someone who typically on drinks very sweet dessert wines but are looking to move your palate in a drier direction – this could be a great stepping stone.
Even, if you’re not into sweet wine or in any of the above categories, this is still a great wine to serve with dessert. Marcarini is one of my favorite Italian wine producers in the Northeastern region of Piedmont. The village/provence of Asti is known for producing the famous sweet and slightly sparkling wine Moscato d’Asti fro the Muscat grape.
So why is this one different? Well for one, the quality of the producer is among the best in Italy. Two, the wine has balance and elegance, the alcohol doesn’t stick out and the sweetness isn’t cloying. It’s the perfect sweet wine AND it’s only $16.99 on wine.com
