How to Taste Wine

Beginner
While wine tasting may seem a mysterious and complex art only for connoisseurs, it all comes down to appearance, smell and taste. Here’s some tips for tasting like a pro.

• Hold the glass by the stem, and tilt slightly so you can assess the colour.
• Swirl the wine in a circular motion to release the aromas.
• Hold the glass up to the light and examine the “legs” that form around the edge of the glass as the wine settles. These may indicate sweetness or alcohol content.
• Sniff the wine and consider the aroma’s strength and freshness.
• Finally take a sip and carefully suck air through your lips, bubbling it through the wine. Rinse around your mouth, then swallow. A long aftertaste is generally a sign of a good drop.
