Bordeaux is split up between two distinct areas with exceedingly different soil types. The right bank showcases primarily dense clay soils that retain moisture while the left bank has predominantly gravelly soils which drain moisture very well. You will find more Merlot planted on the right bank since Merlot prefers its roots to be cool and damp. Cabernet Sauvignon on the other hand much prefers the well drained, rocky soils of the left bank of Bordeaux. Nearly every wine of Bordeaux is a blend of at least 2 of the allowed grapes.
