Classic Mulled Wine Recipe
Ingredients:
1 (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine
1/4 cup brandy (or orange liqueur)
2 oranges, sliced into rounds
8 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
4 star anise
2 tablespoons sugar, honey, or maple syrup to taste (if you want it sweetened)
Garnishes: dried citrus slices, extra cinnamon sticks, extra star anise
Method:
Add the wine and brandy to a small Le Creuset cast iron pot, stir and bring to a simmer.
Add in the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and sweetener of your choice. Cook on medium-high heat and only allow to simmer, you don’t want it to boil, because you don’t want to evaporate the alcohol.
Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the whole simmer for at least 15-30 mins.
Strain the wine, removing and discarding the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise (taste and adjust the sweetener if you want it sweeter).
Serve warm in heatproof Le Creuset mugs, topped with your choice of garnishes.
