Wine Review: Ravenswood Vintners Blend Old Vine Zinfandel 2018

Beginner
Today our Wine Director David Allen MW tastes a wine from an iconic California winery whose future appears to hang in the balance at present. The wine in question is Ravenswood Vintners Blend Old Vine Zinfandel 2018.

Ravenswood Winery is a Californian wine producer, located in Sonoma County in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. It was founded by Joel Peterson in 1976, and is now known for its robust, full-bodied single-vineyard Zinfandel – in keeping with the company’s motto of ‘no wimpy wines’.

As well as Zinfandel, Ravenswood also produced wine from a large collection of varieties including Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Merlot and Chardonnay.

In 2001 Peterson sold Ravenswood to the Constellation Wine Group, but became a vice president of Constellation and styed on as chief winemaker until Constellation sold the brand to E&J Gallo in 2019. The winery is no longer open for visitors, Ravenswood’s website is simply a holding page and few wines were released in 2019 and 2020. There are however signs that Gallo are set to relaunch the brand in the near future.
